Staples Removed and Pulling Teeth

Week 2

Monday

We went back to the hospital to get my oldest's staples removed. Luckily it was quick and tear free unlike the last time he had staples removed and said that it was worse than putting them in. It took less than a minute. I had him pick some essential oils that smelled best to him. He liked Peace and Citrus Bliss so I brought both just in case. I also grabbed some play dough for him to squeeze if he got nervous. I put a drop of Citrus Bliss on that for him too.

We headed to Walmart really quick to grab some poster strips to hang some stuff in our homeschool room and some cupcake liners so we could make a bunch of different kinds of muffins this week. I also let my son choose a treat for surviving the hospital. He's grown so much from his hiding under the doctor's office chair.

I couldn't sleep and woke up around 4:45am so the rest of the day we kept it easy. The kids cleaned the homeschool room. Then they worked on Imagine Math through their My Tech High Homeroom resources, and they also had the choice of doing Night Zookeeper.

My daughter did 2-3 paragraphs within 30 minutes on her own. Back at the start of Covid, it was like pulling teeth to get her to write a couple sentences for her online school work. I better knock on wood, but we are loving Night Zookeeper.
My heart goes out to the families in my area who chose to do online through their school and haven't heard much about what they're supposed to do. From others who have started already, it sounds like it was just like before right when Covid started.

After that we worked on my daughter's tech class, Digital Storytelling, with a video for their YouTube channel and trying a healthy snack in a variety of flavors.  You'll have to watch their YouTube video to see what they thought =D

What flavors of Larabars does your family like?

Tuesday

I had my oldest finish his Beast Academy math pages while my daughter worked on things for her tech class.
We had apples and cheese for snack and then worked on our Good and the Beautiful curriculum.

Lunch time, the kids made mini pizzas using bread slices for their crust. My oldest loves it. I told him different ideas to use for his crust in the future. He'd only seen me do French Bread pizza before I think.

Finished up our language arts. Then clean up time since I had a friend out of town wanting a tour of our new house.

Wednesday

Today we had a cooking day. We made blueberry and chocolate chip muffins. We quadrupled the recipe to practice more math skills.

Since it was Wednesday, for their fun activity, we filled our small inflatable pool for the kids to play in.

Then the kids requested to play Night Zookeeper.
I was hoping to get our Zucchini prepped and in the freezer, but we didn't get to it. Maybe later this week. I was worn out from the day and maybe the stress from my husband's computer not working. Looks like we'll need to buy a new one because he hasn't been able to figure it out.

Thursday
Today my daughter couldn't find her Kindle to work on Good and the Beautiful so we started with Beast Academy. My oldest learned a lot about volume of a triangular prism. I impress myself remembering most of these formulas =D My daughter was grumpy so she didn't get much done and I was frustrated too. I knew she'd always be my hardest one to home school. Even when she was a toddler, she'd never believe me when trying to teach her something. I told her that I went to school to be a teacher and she still doesn't believe me when I tell her how to do certain subjects. We did a quick activity outside to see if a Ninja Warrior course would work on our trees. Since I couldn't find my sewing tape measure, they kids had to figure out how to get the circumference of our tree using our regular tape measure, and I brought out string. They first thought they could just measure the tree with straight lines, but quickly figured out how to use the string and then the tape measure.

So after lunch, we played Mexican train and I made her add up several digit numbers for more practice. To give my older one more of a challenge, he had to add up my scores too. He kept winning and getting 0 so it was a bit easy for him. Haha.

My daughter was still having a rough day so I let her choose between 2 art kits she had. She started on this Sewing Kit. It's pretty nice!

Friday

Our Big Life Journals arrived the other day so we started those. My daughter listened to the podcast too.  I was able to remind them through out the day one of the quotes from their journal.

Since we had no base 10 units, I had my oldest do his math on Minecraft so he could visualize it better. It worked really well. I will have to remember that in the future.

After lunch, I had the kids peel the Zucchini to get it ready to freeze.

Then we played Scrabble for some more spelling, word connection/vocabulary building exercises.

Today there were a lot of tears. Most of the week has been like pulling teeth with my daughter. I always knew it would be a challenge. This week also has been so long, partly because I've been preparing for ShopFest with my dōTERRA products. Then my husband has been working 15 hours days since his computer broke so he's getting a lot of overtime in to build a new computer since it's been a week and still hasn't been able to figure out what's wrong with it. It's so hard to vent to people especially when a decision has been made and there can be judgements about that decision. Just because a decision was the right one, does not make it easy. My husband was supposed to take Monday off, but he canceled that so he could do more overtime. He can only get overtime after he works his full 40 hours. So another week of crazy and I just need to give myself more grace.

Any tips for me a Homeschool Newbie? I've been following all sorts of new homeschool groups and other moms so I've found some new inspiration to help me, but it always takes some time to implement changes and find that balance on what's right for my family. My newest favorite inspiration is Home Centered Learning.  Her children are younger than me, but I like a lot of things she is doing. Hoping to incorporate some little by little.

Tomorrow is my husband's birthday so hopefully I can try and relax some and find some joy in our journey right now.

1st Week Homeschooling

Our primary room where we will be learning. It's mostly where I want it =) I'd love to see others' set up.

Monday - First Day!

ROUGH!

We were getting ready to take our first day of school pictures and printing out their signs, when I heard my oldest start to scream. I run out and don't see what happened. He points to his head and there's blood dripping down and a big cut. Somehow he had fallen backwards and hit his head on the bench. I ran around panicking because it was his largest wound and the hospital was far away. He kept saying he was going to faint. So I quickly put him in the car and ran back into the house grabbing oils, wallet and looking for the phone.

I called the doctor's office while driving to double check to see if I can just come in, but since he was complaining of possibly fainting, they told me to go to the hospital which was 15-20 minutes further from the doctor's office.

We realize that he forgot shoes and we both forgot our masks. Luckily they gave us masks inside and didn't worry about his shoes. I'm sure they see a lot worse.

They got him settled and cleaned out the wound. He took that well so they put 2 staples in without a shot. The doctor originally thought 3-4.
Glad he had that play dough stress ball that a child dept. lady gave to him because he hated the staples, but at least he didn't have a shot and staples. We really appreciated the kindness of our nurse, doctor and technicians. They were patient with my son and explained things to help calm him. They gave him the blanket and some socks since he had no shoes.

He wanted to see the back of his head and shirt once we got home. I figured this was one of the least "gruesome" shots to share.

We quickly did our back to school pictures. I didn't really want to do school because I was mentally exhausted after this morning, but the kids were so excited to start. I quickly had to figure things out since my son wouldn't be able to use electronics.

So first we headed to the library and I told them they all  had to grab around 10 books. We had the librarian help us find some historical fiction books for my son, but most were checked out already. I had them choose some non-fiction books and I found some garbage truck books for my youngest so he was occupied too.

 Library Books

Someone shared this quote on of the school Facebook groups which helped me because after having such a rough day you can start to doubt what you're doing.

Jeffrey R. Holland "With any major decision there are cautions and considerations to make, but once there has been illumination, beware the temptation to retreat from a good thing. If it was right when you prayed about it and trusted it and lived for it, it is right now. Don’t give up when the pressure mounts."

Since it was rough, I let the kids open 1/2 new MagnaTile boxes I grabbed on sale a bit ago. While they played with those I read some of their new library books.

Then I had them right the title of the book and author with a sentence with what they learned from each book so I can add these books to their Goodreads accounts if I can remember their passwords.

Then we just played a bunch of learning games, again all from SimplyFun. I love the SimplyFun games because they are educational, short, easy to learn, and to adapt for different levels. I made them take turns keeping score with each game to practice more math skills.

We started with Trifusion which teaches problem solving and pattern recognition to build connections.

Then we played Digger's Garden Match which helps with problem solving to make as many connections as they can which makes it challenging enough for adults to play =)

Our youngest loved his Garbage Truck books! He also enjoyed playing with the new MagnaTiles while I helped the other kids.

Tuesday

Today felt a bit more normal so I'll share our rough schedule/routine we're doing for now with my oldest not being able to use screens in case of a concussion.

We start at 9am. We have prayer, the pledge, gospel card, and scriptures. This will be our standard start each day. When my son is doing better we'll add a YouTube exercise short video or maybe we'll do walks or outdoor sports in the morning while we still have hot days and move that to the afternoons when it gets cooler.

Today we did some free printables from Big Life Journal, a mindset website focused on supporting kids. If you sign up for her emails, I think she sends out free printables every week. I really like her Back to School Care Package in her email last week. It was fun getting to know my kids' likes more and they learned more about me.

We do snack time around 10:30am. I looked up snack tray ideas so there was a little something they could grab anytime through the day.

I then had the kids list 3 educational goals they have for the first half of the year and what prize they should get when they achieve it. They were much cheaper than I was so glad I made them create their lists. I was going to offer my daughter $20 for new toys/clothes if she had her multiplication facts down, but she chose Coldstone. Works for me =D

I had the kids make bread with our bread machine. They learned the difference more between TBSP and tsp. =D

We then went on a walk at my 2 year olds request. Just around the block since it was so hot.

Noon we have lunch time to match with my husband's breaks with work since he works from home.

Then we did some read alouds with Math Curse and Stinky Cheese Man. I love doing math with a math story!  We just did a few pages in each of the books. I need to get my voice stronger and have lots of water for all this reading aloud haha.

Next we played Sumology, another game from SimplyFun. Think Scrabble with math equations =).

We ended with coloring and listening to Ivy and Bean audio book. My oldest is really loving audio books. We've really learned a lot with his reading style in the last few months. Along with graphic novels, we learned that he enjoys historical fiction war books, ebooks, and audio books the best.

Wednesday

I would like to designate Wednesdays as our field trip/fun days to help break up the week. From a homeschool group, I heard most people take their field trips Fridays so I'm also hoping Wednesdays are not as busy.

Today after we did our standard items, we had lunch early and got ready to leave for the Museum of Natural Curiosity. You have to schedule a head time to get reserve times to go to any Thanksgiving Point venue. We were glad to see the play area open, but it sure is hard to play in there with a mask on. My youngest didn't love the rope nets so I had to get him.

They all loved the Courage room and we got good laughs out of there.

I haven't taken them to any parks so they really enjoyed getting outside on the zip lines there.

They probably loved the Water Works room the most.

My youngest loved the tornado. He's been obsessed with watching tornado videos lately.

They all love the wind chamber and the gas balls section.

My favorite was the measurement room. It's the room that gets changed up every month. I loved them trying to guess what 5 seconds was and balance scales and measure themselves with different units.

Thursday

Since I had to pick up my employee appreciation lunch on this day, we headed back to Thanksgiving Point again, but this time to the Museum of Ancient Life because they opened up their sand areas which was my kids' favorite part.

Today one of the workers shared with my kids a Stegosaurus spike which was cool to learn about and see.

After we grabbed some ice cream cones next door since they seemed to learn a lot more today and were good.

After, I found out our Beast Academy curriculum was ready to pick up so we grabbed those and then headed to pick up my Employee appreciation lunch. Then we stopped at Arctic Circle for some fries.

Friday

Now that my oldest could use electronics again, today we did our first lesson in The Good and the Beautiful Language Arts curriculum. They kids chose which poems there were going to memorize and then did their 20 minutes of reading before their snack/recess break.

After we did our first Beast Academy lessons. Since they are in different books for those, I had my oldest try out Imagine Math, free in our homeroom while I helped my daughter who doesn't love math get started with our new math curriculum. So far she really likes the story/graphics. Then while she did her workbook pages, my son got started on his.

Then it was lunch time. After lunch,  I gave them a choice to either clean up the basement/homeschool room and then play games or finish their math to get a lesson check mark (when they get 30 lesson check marks completed between LA and Math, we get ice cream) and play Night Zookeeper

They chose to clean up the basement and then we played several rounds of Linkity, another SimplyFun game (so glad I have all these games from 6-7 years ago). This game is a creative word connection game.

We survived the week! and everyone is still excited to learn!

Back to School Plans for 2020-2021 School Year

Never say never --- looks like homeschooling is the direction we're going at least for this school year.

I never thought I'd be into natural health solutions, but then came
dōTERRA in 2012 after I struggled with my children's immune systems and breathing issues. I've been using essential oils and teaching about natural solutions for 8 years now.

I never thought I'd have 3rd child, then we were inspired to have another in 2017, 6.5 years after our 2nd child.

I never thought I'd cloth diaper, I do on and off with our 3rd child. Definitely not too bad with the all in one cloth diapers, and thanks to the Fluff Love & CD Science FB group.

I never thought I'd home school, but thanks to a friend explaining the basics and My Tech High giving around $1500+ in funds per kid and having several different options with their own classes, 3rd party classes or custom build classes it felt like a good fit for my family and kids are excited to learn again. I'm mostly excited too, but of course nervous as I try to remember that this doesn't have to look like public school especially since I have a degree in elementary education.
My kids are excited to learn how to use a 3D Printer, take swim lessons, get Kiwi crates, learn geography through cooking, paint kits, work more on their YouTube channel, expand video game design knowledge and more with custom built classes through My Tech High.

My kids originally chose to go back in person to school so I did a mask day to practice, but then I found out we had our initial application approved for My Tech High so I told them about that, and they got excited. Then I worried I was trying to push this idea so I had them pray about it. It was a good learning experience and ultimately they made they choice to be homeschool and use this program.

Mail Day
Here's our good mail day that has our starter stuff to get going.

Usborne Books - I'd love to hear what books you are using for your homeschool year from Usborne or which are your kids' favorites!
Paint Kits - My Little Paintbrush ships all around the United States now!
Amazon extras - here's some of my wish list items that I'm not sure will fit into our budget this year.

Again here are the basic details:

My Tech High, an online public charter school in Utah is offering $1500+ per kid for custom built classes. Or they have other options for learning and you can choose for each subject. They have sisters schools in Colorado (same name) and Idaho and Wyoming (called Tech Trep).

1. My Tech High Class - someone else teaches them through online resources.

2. Custom Built Class - $225 per class reimbursed

3. 3rd Party Group Classes $300 reimbursed for the whole year.

We're getting reimbursed for things like swim lessons, 3D Printer, rec center passes, museum passes, Kiwi Crates, Usborne Books, learning games, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus, internet fees, ink, heat press, Ancestry DNA kit, and so much more.

If it interests you even a little bit, you can get your foot in the door with the first part of the application for 2nd Semester starting December 16th 2020 through January 11th 2021. Let me know if you want more info. It might require a phone/video call though to explain a good chunk of it, but I've also created a spreadsheet guide to share.

Here's some of our plans for the year with curriculum and our class descriptions we submitted.

Beast Academy
Math curriculum. We are using the books, but maybe in the future I'll look into the online subscription as well. I will also be playing lots of math games like Fourmation and BankIt from SimplyFun and practicing with clocks and workbooks with timed facts tests.

Kiwi Crate

I think it's so cool that you can get a longer subscription and switch it up between crates!
My kids are mostly trying the Tinker Crates (for my son's Building and Design elective) and Doodle Crates (for my daughter's Arts elective) this year.

Night Zookeeper
Great for Language Arts
Both of my kids are really liking this one so far, and I'll take anything that will get them engaged and excited to learn. My 11 year old has even requested to play.
$5 off with my link: https://www.nightzookeeper.com/en-us/parents/start?code=ry1aH6lZD
We will also be using the Good and the Beautiful curriculum with their free PDFs for the first 4 weeks of school since they've had so much of their stuff out of stock. My kids will be accessing this on their Kindles with a PDF reader.
I also want to focus more on grammar. My kids are fabulous readers, but they don't understand a lot of grammar words/tools to help their writing be better. I'm sure through the
Good and the Beautiful curriculum and some grammar/D.O.L. workbooks they will improve.

Some other programs I found to supplement with Language Arts before I learned everything about My Tech High were Spell Quiz and Quill.

Spell Quiz is for kids and adults and those learning English. Spell Quiz has a 2 week free trial. Spelling isn't the only focus and is different than your standard school spelling. Listening, dictation, typing, vocabulary and speed are also being strengthened on this website. It's really great for those who like competition. It ranks you
against others which makes it more engaging and fun program.

Quill is an easy way to test your child's grammar and writing. They allow you to put each child/student in by their grade and assign specific lessons to them. The lessons are easy for you to follow to lead your children/students as well. They offer a free basic version and they have a premium version.

Outschool
So many different classes to choose from, and you can take tell your friends to sign up for the same one. and you can take it together.
My kids have liked the StemQwest Video Game Design and Kawaii drawing classes so far. I enjoyed them taking an emotions class as well.
$20 credit with my link:

Here's our basement set up for now until we discover our flow with Flysta shelves I picked up from IKEA. Hoping to get a a cool globe and organize it a bit better.

Wish us luck today with our first day!

I pray we all can have a good school year no matter our choice. I know it's tough and there will be more changes to come I'm sure as everyone is trying new things this school year.

*These opinions are all mine, but the coupon codes are affiliate links which will give me some credit towards my subscriptions. I just love sharing what I know to help others. Sometimes I wish someone would have shared things like this with me sooner.
