Fashionable Fridays #31 - Modest Fashion Sense

Check out the winners of the Blog Design Giveaway in the next post!

I'm so excited for Ruby from Modest Fashion Sense to share some modest New Year's party clothing with you!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello! My name is Ruby from Modest Fashion Sense and I am very excited to get to "guest post" on this Fashionable Friday, and I have a fun Holiday treat for you! It seems that holiday fashion (as cold has the holidays are) has become more and more scandalous. This might work for some, but if you are like me and you are not as comfortable in these fashions then this post is for you. I have some holiday fashion ideas for that New Year's Party that just might blow your mind, or at least I hope they do :)
First idea:  The sequin jacket. I am kind of in love with this jacket, and if you are usually afraid of bold looks, New Years Eve parties are the perfect place to get comfortable with them because it is the time to wear something a little bolder, and a little brighter. You don't want to get too crazy with the sequins though, so just limit it to one item of clothing. That's the secret to being bold, but not over the top :) I love the slouchy shirt look with skinny jeans and a blazer, but sometimes they can be really low in the front. If this is the case, choose another shirt/tank to go underneath it that is another shade of the same color.
Now usually when you think New Years Eve, or Holiday, party you think cocktail dress. This is the usual, but that doesn't mean you can't wear pants. Just make them dressy, or your top dressy and that is all you need to spice up an outfit for your holiday party. For this one I have cuff pants because basically they are my new obsession. Yes, I kind of love them. They are another bold choice that some might not be comfortable with. If not, try out some fun skinny jeans or if you are pear-shaped, try some straight-legged pants that go all the way to the ground. Then spice up the top with a sequin shirt. You can find sequin t-shirts at fun places like Charlotte Russe, but it all you can find is a sequin tank, then try putting a ruffle jacket over it.
Here's my favorite :) The traditional cocktail dress. I have two ideas for this because it seems that you can either find a dress that has sleeves, but is too short, or it is long enough, but no sleeves. Here are two ideas for that predicament. The one above is for if you need sleeve. Start with your favorite cocktail dress. Then find a neutral cardigan that matches the print of the dress. Now, because this cardigan is gray and the dress is black I wanted to spice it up with a fun belt and shoes. You will want to take the belt and wrap it around your waist with the cardigan underneath the belt as well. This way, the cardigan does not overwhelm the dress, and you keep that girlish figure. Then top it off with some fun tights. Now the shoes can either match the belt or the tights. If you are shorter you will want to wear shoes that match the tights to elongate your legs.
Now on to the cocktail dress that is too short. The easy fix is to throw on some fun sequin leggings, or metallic leggings. Now if you don't feel comfortable in leggings that is ok, just find some skinny jeans that are fun. Even if you are pear shaped this will work for you if the dress comes down to at least mid thigh.
These are not all your options, but at least something that get that brain workin! Thanks for letting me visit this Friday!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks so much Ruby for all the great ideas!! Loving the sequin ideas but not together - only one bold sequin look =D I think my favorite look is the 2nd one, but I've never tried cuffed pants. It's so cold that pants are a great option! Love the jacket in the 2nd look too. Loving that necklace in the 4th look. Wish I had money to shop!

Have a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful, fashionable New Year!

Well, I like the M&M but Avatarlady is right, I think chocolate.
How about M&M's Icing on the Cake Designs(or just leave out the M&M's)... header with a layered cake with both you sitting on one of the layers... maybe one of you piping icing on the cake or better yet on a laptop (as the cake-topper!)
I have another idea.... well sort of. I was thinking of an art easel, ur hubby drawing and you on the computer facing the other way. but no name yet?!?

Gingerbread Houses

Back in 2007, my husband and I did a Gingerbread House together. I've been wanting to make it a tradition in our family, but having a kid, getting busy around the holidays and money being tight I kept forgetting.

Well this year while shopping by myself, I decided to splurge on the $9 kit to have some more Christmas memories. I'm so glad I did! I can't wait to do it again next year. It was so fun to watch our 2 year old help.

After this point, I took off the large balls of candy because we discovered they were mint and too good to keep on the gingerbread house. Then we let our son just have at it.
Don't you love his little hand adding candies in the left picture?

Here we got creative with some other candy. I made Christmas trees with a Reeses bottom and a Hershey Kiss top. My son was then obsessed with making little trees.

Maybe when all the kids are older, I'll attempt to make gingebread from scratch unless someone has a really good easy recipe I could try for next year!

What traditions do you have with your family that builds wonderful memories?

27th Mommy Mondays

Is being pregnant with the 2nd, 3rd, etc. child harder than the first or does it just depend?

This baby is even lower than my son was or maybe because it's in breech position, it's kicking my lower abdomen up. More back pains too, but that could be from picking up my 30 lbs. son. I forgot to ask my doctor, but should I stop picking up my toddler? I try not to pick him as much as I can.

This holiday season sure has me warn out too: baking, wrapping packages, shipping, etc. Last night I felt like I was going to pass out when finishing the Buckeyes I was making.

I hate complaining when I'm pregnant, because there are so many people who don't get to experience the joys of pregnancy. It's just harder to remember to take care of myself when I have a 2 year old as well. I had my son before Christmas so maybe it's just the holiday season.

How's everyone's holiday shopping going? Are you finished? I'm pretty sure I am - thank goodness. Now I just need to finish wrapping presents for my little family. The other presents to be shipped out are all set. What things do you have to do this week? More baking, cooking, wrapping?

Fashionable Fridays #30

I found another cool and modest fashion blog, Modest Fashion Sense. She's giving away a cute headband from Veechay too. Go enter! Low entries!
She'll be doing some guest posts in the near future too! Yeah!!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here's the other Rosette Headband I made. It's cream with gold pearls, perfect for a holiday party.
I did my hair all curly for my ward's Christmas Party and was inspired by this Holiday Hair over at The Dating Divas.
You can see my whole outfit here that I wore to the party along with my family's.
We tried to get a nice family picture, but it just didn't work out.
I tried to get a picture later of just our son; he wouldn't sit still. Oh well.
Rosette Flower Headbands
I finally finished some headbands and I love them. Too bad I have to give away some for gifts so I better make some more for me to wear!
I used a combination of these tutorials from The Dating Divas & Crafting and Creativity.
Materials:
  • Headbands from the $1 - I found some packs with 5-8 in them and some came with clips so I might try and so some flower clips too.
  • 1 1/2 in strips of fabric (Wal-mart usually has a little bin of leftover fabric that's on clearance) - the longer the strip, the bigger the flower
  • pearls (I bought a huge assortment package of pearls at Wal-mart for $9)
  • fabric scissors
  • hot glue and glue gun (I also used some E6000 glue for adding pearls and adding it to the headband because I've had hot glue headbands come undone over time)
I like tying a knot at the end of mine to start, but if you're going to add the flower to a headband, I wouldn't put a backing on it until you attach it to the headband.
One little tip to make the twisted ones fast, tie your knot on one head and twist all the fabric and then twist the fabric around your finger and let go of some as you glue it. It goes a little faster that way instead of twisting and gluing as you go.
Most of mine I did the twisted flowers, but one of the green ones (I made those green ones several months ago like in August) I did a braided one. I like the look of the braided one, but if you're trying to make a bunch at once, I'd do the twisted one.
To check out one other one I made, come back tomorrow for my Fashionable Fridays!
Christmas Altered Frames
I made these cute little frames using a free printable from Betty Crocker Wannabe. I shrunk it down to a 5x7 and printed it at Wal-mart. I tried to put the pictures in a 5x7 frame, but the frames I got kept hiding part of the printable so I went back and got 7x7 frames instead. I added some scrapbook paper to the back, some snowflakes brads and some glittery stickers to give it more pop. I love it and it cost me about $2.50 since I had the rest of supplies on hand.
I gave these to some people and visit teach and some friends plus I'm keeping one for my self =D It's a great little reminder to remember the true meaning of Christmas too.
26th Mommy Mondays
The busy holiday season with lots of gift ideas. I've been seeing these new Crayola products on TV and they look so cool to me!! I want them....my son would like them too =D
Anyway There are Two Sides is giving away a Crayola Prize Pack that includes one of these. My son loves to color and this is mess free and makes sounds. Too cool! Low entries on this giveaway! This giveaway ends on December 22 at 12:00pm EST
What are some things you are buying for your kids this holiday season? How about what you're getting your spouse? What is the one thing you want?
My son is getting some things from the thrift store that I found: a school desk ($4 - I plan on mod podging it to make it look nicer) where he can color and keep his art supplies, some car racing things ($3 and $4) since I won't be able to make his car mat since we're trying to get him a new bed.
For my husband, he wants to renew his art magazine, Imagine FX. Then I'm putting this date idea into a box to wrap. http://thedahlingdatingdivas.blogspot.com/2010/06/sassy-suggestion-inner-child-date.html That way when we can go on a date; we'll have all the supplies needed already.
For me, in case you don't already know, I'm dying for a Silhouette machine!!! but that won't be happening this Christmas which is okay. I'm happier to be able to give gifts to family and friends then to myself during the holidays.
    Christmas 2010 Decor
    DON'T FORGET TO ENTER MY GIVEAWAY. Holiday Card Design from the Sweetest Impressions! Ends Friday, December 10th. ONLY 1 ENTRY SO FAR.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Here's what our Christmas decorations look like this year.

    My son helping to decorate our little 3 foot tree. One day we'll have the 6-7 footer. It's so fun that my son can help now.

    A little JOY sign on our door. Trade from Frills.
    Our stockings: I made my husband's several years ago. My great grandma made mine when I was 3. My mom put my son's name on the last one and I hope to add more to it someday soon.

    Our mantle: I have so many miscellaneous items from gifts from friends, students, kids I watched at day care etc. So I did my best to arrange them attractively on my mantle since I don't have very much other holiday decor.

     Here's a close-up of our Nativity scene that's on the right side of our mantle.

    This year I put our tree by the window even though it's barely tall enough to see even on my large storage container stand. I love seeing Christmas trees through people's windows though.
    On the left I created a little display of all the holiday books and CDs we have. I plan to read them or listen to them over the next few weeks.
    Our little snowman advent calendar (maybe one day I'll make one for my kids). When I was little we had one where we put mini candy canes for each day so we took turns on who got the candy cane. Oh I'm writing this on the 6th so don't worry I'm keeping up with the calendar =D

    My son wanted his picture taken by the tree too. I'll be getting better one of him by the tree later.

    Stay tuned - tomorrow another giveaway!
